When you close your eyes, you’re bombarded with a stream of thoughts about things you did that day, things you didn’t do, and worries about tomorrow. The thoughts are often self-limiting and self-destructive. The Emotional Freedom Technique, or EFT, is a method of tapping on acupuncture points on the face and upper body, usually accompanied by positive affirmations. Acupuncture points represent the places where the body’s physical and psychological energy flow and they can get blocked and need help to get unstuck. EFT tapping on these energy meridians functions the same as acupuncture, helping to free stuck energy and help positive energy begin to flow throughout your entire being.

Traditional EFT includes an affirmation template that you should use to address each of the things plaguing you. The template is, “Even thought I–” “I deeply and completely accept myself.” So if you are upset that you forgot your friend Rose’s birthday and it’s really bothering you, you would use the EFT tapping technique while using the affirmation, “Even though I forgot Rose’s birthday, I deeply and completely accept myself.”

Acceptance of ourselves and that we’re fallible creatures is essential to having a clear and healthy heart and mind, and the EFT affirmation is used until you have used positive self-talk to overcome the negative mind chatter.

Even if you do not believe the affirmation, you should still use it. Think of it as a washcloth slowly working away the grime on a dirty window until you can see clearly. Reciting it out loud is best, even if you have to murmur it under your breath, and say it with emphasis. Don’t be afraid to attack your problems with positivity!

Clearing mind chatter with EFT is easy. Each of the thoughts that are running around and around in your mind, adding to your stress and keeping you awake at night become part of the affirmations. If you find yourself worrying about a project due tomorrow, tapping with the affirmation, “Even though I have this project due tomorrow, I deeply and completely accept myself,” will put you at ease with yourself after a few rounds and you will be able to get a good night’s sleep, preparing you for anything you need to do in the morning.
